Work Overview:

An automotive manufacturer needed to adapt their production line to accommodate two vehicle models using the same 6-axis robot for spare tire installation. We were brought in to perform a feasibility study, modify the robot’s end effector, and provide path planning for precise installation. This involved 3D scanning the environment to create a digital twin, simulating the current process, and designing a solution for the new model.

Objectives:

  1. Assess the feasibility of modifying the existing robot for dual vehicle production.
  2. Modify the end effector to ensure compatibility with both vehicle models.
  3. Develop path planning for accurate and efficient spare tire installation.

Scope of Work:

We delivered an integrated solution by:

  • 3D scanning the environment to create a digital twin for accurate positioning.
  • Simulating the current installation process to identify improvements.
  • Modifying the robot’s end effector to handle both vehicle models.
  • Creating and testing new path planning for precise tire installation across both models.

Impact:

The reprogrammed robot enabled the client to smoothly transition between models on the production line, reducing setup costs by 20% and minimizing downtime.
