Work Overview:

An automotive manufacturer that uses a collaborative robot to apply window sealant faced frequent issues with blockages in the pump system and inconsistent seal height and width. We were brought in to design a complete engineering solution that included a new end effector and an optimized pump and piping system. Our goal was to ensure a consistent, defined path for sealant application while preventing the sealant from drying in the pipes during production breaks, such as lunch breaks.

Objectives:

  1. Design a new end effector to ensure uniform sealant application with consistent height and width.
  2. Redesign the pump and piping system to eliminate blockages and maintain smooth flow.
  3. Implement a solution that prevents sealant from drying in the pipes during production pauses.

Scope of Work:

Our engineering solution included:

  • Designing a new end effector to deliver precise and consistent sealant application.
  • Developing an optimized pump and piping system to ensure continuous, smooth sealant flow without blockages.
  • Creating a mechanism that prevents sealant from drying during breaks, ensuring smooth restarts in production.

Impact:

Our solution improved the consistency of seal application by 20%, reduced maintenance stoppages due to blockages by 30%, and ensured efficient operation even during production breaks.
